Surf Cup Dust Pollution Complaints

Dust and dirt kicked up from Surf Cup’s activities on the fields and the attendant cars, trucks and tractors traversing their frontage roads and parking lots is a continual nuisance and health hazard.  For those of us who live directly adjacent to the fields, this dust covers our cars, our homes, and even the furniture inside our homes when windows and doors are left open.  Surf Cup does occasionally use water trucks to tamp it down, but they are not doing the job effectively.  We’ve noticed Surf Cup has added some kind of material or chemical to the water to mitigate the dust, but this has actually worsened the situation as the dust is now ‘sticky’ and more difficult to remove from our windows, screens, patio furniture… all that it covers.

The San Diego Air Pollution Control District takes dust and its effects very seriously.  They recently sent one of their representatives out to the fields to assess the level of dust being generated that day after receiving a complaint.  This representative told me if any of us sees dust being kicked up, we should call their department and report it- 858-586-2650. Calling their department and getting someone on the phone is remarkably easy.  They seem to be staffed with people that are dedicated and care about the environment.   They will send someone out immediately, if possible.  The rep  I spoke to suggested we take photos and videos whenever possible and send them in to their department.  Besides calling in, one can send in a complaint form found here. This representative told me if they hear from 4 or 5 people from our neighborhood, they will take action. They want to know it is an ongoing situation, and not a single event.  Please keep this in mind for the next Surf Cup ‘event’.  For the district to receive a multitude of calls and emails at one time may be most effective.

If any of you do have an occasion to make a report, please share that information and what happened by emailing us or posting a comment below this update.

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Carmel Valley Planning Group meeting January 23, 2020, 7Pm, Carmel Valley Library.  The going has been slow,  but our mission continues to move forward.  Be assured, we are making progress every day!
